The Selsey Lifeboat Beach Fishing Competition 26th July 2014

Mandy, Clive and Lou Lou This year's competition started a little bit earlier at 10.00 a.m., with Lou Lou and Mandy, the registration team, set up by 8.30 a.m. Unlike last year the sun shone down on us all day and there were no incidents of gazebos being blown across the sea front, much to the relief of the girls.

We had 22 competitors with a mixture of new and old faces. It was a hard fought competition with most of the catch being black bream with a few wrasse thrown in, apart from one angler, who had best remain nameless, who caught a grey mullet.

We had a call half way through the competition asking what was the minimum length for a grey mullet and were told that the one caught was well over 13". However, by the time we got to the fisherman in question, it had escaped. There are two versions as to how this occurred; you can chose which one is the most plausible:

The fish was placed in a bucket for safe keeping, however, there was no water in the bucket. The fisherman put the bucket, with the fish still in it, into the sea to scoop up some water. This resulted in the fish doing a Steve McQueen impression and it escaped.
There was water in the bucket, but the fish jumped out, flew over 5’ of shingle, and escaped (and you thought Free Willy was about a whale).

Nemo is alive and well and living in Selsey Polly did catch another fish, as seen in the photograph - he found Nemo alive and well and living off of Selsey.

At the end of the competition it was back to the Lifeboat, pub that is, for the presentations and refreshments.

The presentation of trophies and prizes was given by the wives of the directors of our sponsor, Insulated Construction, as follows:

3rd Place – Kevin Holder
Best Species – Luke McAllister

A big thank you to everyone who took part - the catch may not have been as big as previous years but the fun and banter was better than ever.
