The day started out very well; the sun was shining and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.
The girls, Terrie, Rose, Lou and Mandy, were set up under a gazebo by 13.30, busy taking
registration fees, selling Lifeboat Week programmes and fishing bait.
The competition started at 14.30 with thirty-four anglers taking part. By 14.35 a heavy
squall descended, with bucketing rain and strong wind, leaving the gazebo in bits and
four drenched girls heading for home.
Unperturbed by the weather, the majority of the anglers continued through to the end. A number of fish were caught including several Black Bream, Gilt Head Bream, a small Tub Gurnard and a small Bass, both of the latter being released back to the sea. The winning fish was a 2lb Black Bream, caught, we understand, by a former member of the Lifeboat Crew.
During the competition the anglers were afforded the opportunity of watching the
Inshore Lifeboat being launched to aid a power boat with engine failure, eventually
towing it back to the East Beach ramp, giving a clear insight as to where the fund
raising monies go. Despite Will’s protests, we can confirm that he was not given a
refund just because he was called out on the shout!
On behalf of Selsey Lifeboat, a big thanks to the anglers who braved the elements, to
John, Tony and Mark from Insulated Construction Ltd who sponsored this event and
donated the prize money and trophies, to the girls who helped out, and to the others
who made contributions, all of whom made this event a resounding success, raising a
very substantial amount for the new Selsey Lifeboat.
Looking forward to seeing you all again next year!!
