Selsey RNLI All-Weather Lifeboat Launched to Search for Two Overdue Kayakers

Overdue Kayakers Overdue Kayakers

The UK Coastguard requested the launch after receiving reports that two Kayakers were overdue returning to the beach at Angmering-on-Sea. It was reported that the two adult males were dressed only in swimming trunks and had no lifesaving equipment and no means of calling for help.

The all-weather Lifeboat (ALB) launched at 3.26 p.m. on Friday 29th July and made best speed to the area approximately 12.5 nautical miles from the station. The weather on scene was wind southerly force 1, calm sea in sunshine. Littlehampton Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT) had also been tasked and whilst the ALB was en route reported that they could see what appeared to be the Kayakers. At 3.58 p.m. the ALB closed the target position given by the CRT and confirmed that this was the missing pair. They were heading back to shore but were tired.

The two men confirmed that they were happy to continue towards the beach with the ALB escorting them as far as the ALB could safely navigate. The Littlehampton CRT met the two men when they reached the beach and the ALB was released by the UK Coastguard to return to Station. The ALB returned to Selsey at 5.20 p.m. and was recovered straight away.
