Selsey RNLI Called After Vessel Issues a Pan Emergency Call for Assistance

Selsey all-weather lifeboat (ALB) launched at 7.04 p.m. on Saturday 28th May at the request of the UK Coastguard, who had received a Pan emergency call from a yacht reporting engine failure and lots of smoke. The skipper was concerned that, with the south-easterly wind and the tide against them, they would be pushed on to the Mixon reef.

After launching the ALB received an updated position putting the vessel 2 miles south-east of the station. The weather conditions on scene were wind south-easterly force 2-3, sea state smooth in cloudy sky. The yacht skipper was contacted via VHF radio and confirmed to the Lifeboat that the two females, two dogs and two parrots aboard were all OK.

The ALB arrived on scene at 7.12 p.m. and, after closing the vessel, a line was passed and a tow was established between the Lifeboat and the yacht. At 7.31 p.m. the tow towards Chichester Harbour commenced. The entrance to Chichester Harbour was reached at 9.28 p.m. and, once inside the harbour, the tow was changed to an alongside tow for better manoeuvrability when taking the yacht into the marina.

At 10.00 p.m. the yacht was safely berthed at Sparkes Marina, and the ALB was released by the UK Coastguard. The ALB returned to Selsey at 10.38 p.m. and was recovered straight away.
