The UK Coastguards requested the launch after receiving an emergency call saying that two girls were being swept out to sea at Pagham spit.
The inshore Lifeboat (ILB) was ready to launch when the Coastguards reported that the girls were out of the water on the Selsey side of the spit. The Selsey Coastguard team were also on route and requested that the inshore Lifeboat still proceed to check on the girls' welfare.
The ILB launched at 2.04 p.m. and made best speed to Pagham, arriving on scene at 2.13 p.m. to find the two girls on the shingle with two adults who had seen the girls struggling and had stayed with them, updating the Coastguards via mobile phone. Two Lifeboat crew went ashore to assess the girls; both were cold and shaken by the expirience. Shortly afterwards the Selsey Coastguard team arrived. The girls were taken aboard the ILB and returned to the Pagham side where Littlehampton Coastguards were waiting with the girls' mum.
The ILB was released by the Coastguards at 2.30 p.m. to return to station. They returned to station at 2.48 p.m. and the ILB was recovered straight away, washed down and made ready for service.
CREW: Colin Pullenger (Helmsman), Craig Sergeant and Pip Skeet.
