UK Coastguard requested the immediate launch of the D class inshore Lifeboat (ILB) after receiving a call from a member of the public reporting a swimmer clinging to a marker buoy off Bognor Pier.
The ILB launched at 12.16 p.m. on Tuesday 18th August and made best speed to the area just off the pier. Littlehampton Coastguard rescue team were also tasked to rendezvous with the first informant.
Once on scene the ILB made a search of the general area with nothing seen and so they extended the area from the pier to the west as far as Aldwick, stepping out on the return leg.
The weather on scene was wind southerly force 4 with sunshine and showers. After a comprehensive search of the area with nothing found the Coastguards stood the ILB down at 1.20 p.m. A false alarm with good intent. The ILB arrived back at station at 1.57 p.m. and was rehoused straight away.
