Selsey RNLI Inshore Lifeboat Launched to Assist Two People Struggling to Recover Their Boat

The crew were paged at 11.09 a.m. on Sunday 21st September 2014. Solent Coastguard had received reports saying that two men were waist deep in the water trying to recover their 15-foot angling boat close to the launching ramp at East Beach, Selsey. The wind was north easterly 4-5 and the high water had just passed, so there was a moderate swell on the shore.
The 'D' class Lifeboat 'Betty and Thomas Moore' was launched at 11.15 a.m. with three volunteer crew. The Lifeboat was on scene within four minutes and was able to establish a tow with the angling boat. One man was taken ashore by the Lifeboat crew and the other stayed on the boat as it was towed the short distance to the ramp where the Selsey Coastguard team were waiting.
It transpired that the boat was being launched on its first trip with new owners after two years of refit, but unfortunately the engine failed to start and the boat was continually pushed back on to the shore and over the groynes. This resulted in the vessel being holed.
At 11.45am the inshore Lifeboat was released to return to station and rehousing was completed at 12.20 p.m.
