Selsey RNLI volunteer crew were paged at 12.31 p.m. on Sunday 25th May 2014. Solent Coastguard had received a report of a yacht aground on Kirk Arrow, a shingle bank on the west side of Selsey.
The 'D' class 'Betty and Thomas Moore' launched at 12.39 p.m. and was on scene with the 7.5-metre yacht 'Amber' at 12.43 p.m. The yacht, which had two female crew, and was lying over bouncing on the shingle. The weather on scene was wind force 4 and a slight sea. With the tide still going out the Helmsman decided to attempt to tow the 'Amber' stern first off the bank. A Lifeboat crewman was transferred to the yacht to rig a tow and the vessel was successfully towed free of the shingle bank.
The 'Amber' was checked for any water ingress and damage before being escorted to safe water. The two ladies on board were mother and daughter and were on passage from Newhaven to Portsmouth. After getting some advice on checking tide times and charts and general passage planning the pair continued their journey.
'Betty and Thomas Moore' was released to return to station and was rehoused, washed down and made ready for service at 1.55 p.m.
CREW: John Reeves (Helmsman), Gary Pearce, Kristina Dolan (Trainee).
