Selsey RNLI volunteer Lifeboat crew went to the aid of the 8-metre charter angling boat 'True Grit' out of Cowes, Isle of Wight, with six persons on board. The engine had failed to start and they were at anchor 2.5 miles south of Selsey Bill. The weather on scene was a calm sea with a force 1 wind.
The Tyne class Lifeboat 'Voluntary Worker' launched at 2.43 p.m. on Tuesday 29th April and arrived at the 'True Grit' position at 2.51 p.m. The crew of 'True Grit' recovered their anchor and a tow was established between the Lifeboat and the angling boat. A course was set for Chichester Harbour.
During the tow the skipper of 'True Grit' made a telephone call to a friend with another charter boat, 'Sea Fox', who agreed to come and take over the tow from the Lifeboat for the rest of the way to Cowes.
The tow was released at 4.20 p.m. in a position half a mile west of Chichester Harbour. After making sure that the tow was safely established between the two angling boats and they were underway the Lifeboat returned to Selsey, arriving at 5.10 p.m. and rehousing straight away. 'Voluntary Worker' was refuelled, washed down and ready for service at 5.45 p.m.
