Selsey Lifeboat Station - Launches

15th September 2013

'Virgin Kite Surfer Armada' Charity Event

Selsey ILB 'Betty and Thomas Moore' launched at 10:30 to act as a guard vessel along with other rescue services for the 'Virgin Kite Surfer Armada' charity event.

Approximately 300 kite surfers were expected to complete a 46-mile course from Hayling Island Beach to Lancing Beach.

Whilst afloat between Selsey Lifeboat Station and Church Norton, the ILB assisted 11 kite surfers.

Of these 11, two kite surfers had gear failure and the ILB transported them on to safety at Pagham Yacht Club. One had a twisted harness and the other had twisted lines, both of these had their kites depowered by the ILB crew, allowing them to untangle themselves and re-launch. In addition 7 kite surfers were reunited with their lost boards.

After 5 hours afloat and all kite surfers safe around Selsey Bill and at Pagham Yacht club, 'Betty and Thomas Moore' stood down, returning to station before being made ready for service at 16:30.
