Selsey all weather lifeboat 'Voluntary Worker' launched at 10:40 to assist an 18-metre
sloop 'Sea Beast' which had experienced gearbox failure and was drifting becalmed with
three male persons on board approximately 17 miles south of the lifeboat station.
The lifeboat and crew arrived on scene at 11:41 and passed a towline to the casualty. At 11:56 a course was set for Chichester Harbour. Good progress was made in the fine conditions despite the casualty’s weight of 44 tons. At 14:40 Chichester Harbour entrance was reached where we were met and escorted by the Chichester Harbour Patrol Launch. At 15:25, upon arriving at Itchenor Reach, the tow was passed to the Harbour Patrol Launch who then proceeded to berth the Sea Beast on a visitors' pontoon.
Selsey lifeboat departed to return to station but at 16:00, just outside the entrance of Chichester Harbour the crew came across a broken down 15-foot speedboat called 'Itsa Breeze' with five persons on board. The lifeboat stood by the casualty until Hayling lifeboat arrived on scene and towed them back into Chichester Harbour.
At 16:39 'Voluntary Worker' carried on back to station arriving back at 17:05, rehoused straight away and was ready for service once more at 17:25.
