Selsey All weather lifeboat 'Voluntary Worker' launched at 16:33 at the request of Solent Coastguard to take over a tow from Littlehampton lifeboat which had commenced towing a 36-foot fishing vessel, 'MFV Mayfly', with battery problems, which meant that the crew were unable to start the engine. The casualty was proving to be too large and too heavy for the ILB to tow safely.
'Voluntary Worker' arrived on scene at 17:17 approximately 5 miles due south of Littlehampton and a tow line was passed. A course was set for the West Pole beacon south of Chichester Harbour which was reached at 19:30.
At 19:45 another fishing vessel from Portsmouth took over the tow and both vessels proceeded to their home port of Portsmouth. 'Voluntary Worker' left the scene at 19:48 and arrived back at the station at 20:17.
