Selsey inshore lifeboat ‘Betty and Thomas Moore’ launched at 11:27am at the request of Solent Coastguard to provide safety cover during an attempt to refloat a 10-metre angling boat which had broken away from its moorings in Littlehampton Harbour during the night and ended up beached at Park Copse on the east beach at Selsey.
Another angling boat the ‘Lynander’ arrived from Littlehampton to attempt towing the stranded boat off the beach. Selsey ILB crew assisted in passing the tow line but several attempts to pull the casualty clear on a rising tide only resulted in the towline parting each time. The casualty vessel was now half full of water and at 1pm a decision was made to abandon all efforts to refloat her.
At 1:04pm Solent Coastguard released Selsey ILB to return to station, the boat and crew arrived back at 1:20pm, rehoused at 1:25pm and the Lifeboat was made ready for service once more at 2pm.
