Selsey Lifeboat Station - Launches

20-Foot Yacht Reported in Difficulty off of Pagham

Selsey all weather lifeboat Voluntary Worker launched at 1710 to investigate a report from a member of the public of a small yacht possibly in trouble close inshore just east of Pagham Harbour. On launching the assistance of the inshore lifeboat Betty and Thomas Moore was requested as the casualty was reported approximately 100 yards offshore.
Both boats arrived on scene at approximately 1725. The ILB went alongside the casualty to find one male person on board anchored stern first and apparently preparing to sit out the weather which was rapidly deteriorating.
It was decided that the best course of action was to tow the casualty back to the station and place on the lifeboat moorings. The ILB towed the casualty safely offshore and then handed over to the ALB. Once back at the station at approximately 1830 the tow was handed back to the ILB which assisted in mooring the casualty up. At 1840 with all secure the crewman was taken ashore and both lifeboats released to return to station. The ILB rehoused at 1845 and was ready for service by 1910. The ALB was re-tasked by Solent Coastguard to a 70 foot Volvo ocean racing yacht.
