ILB D533 ‘PETER CORNISH’ launched at 1756 hrs to assist a 28-foot yacht ‘Carlotta’ with one elderly male person on board. The occupant had been unsure of his navigation, had suffered auxiliary engine failure, and had eventually run aground approximately 100 metres offshore from Selsey Bill Point. The ‘PETER CORNISH’ was on scene within a few minutes.
Having floated off on the rising tide and having managed to anchor, the skipper asked for assistance as he had no working engine and the wind and flood tide were against him. The ‘PETER CORNISH’ attached a towline and towed the casualty into safe water east of the Mixon Beacon before handing the tow over to AWL 47-001 ‘CITY OF LONDON’ to continue towing the ‘Carlotta’ to Chichester Harbour.
The ‘PETER CORNISH’ was released to return to station at 1830 hrs, was recovered at 1840 hrs and made ready for service 1900 hrs.
